In many physical systems, the behavior in the absence of an external field is closely related to their response behavior in the presence of an external field, although both behaviors are measured by different experimental means. For example, Einstein found that the mean square displacement of Brownian particles (in the absence of a concentration gradient) is proportional to the diffusion coefficient (in the presence of a concentration gradient). This is the well-known fluctuation-response relation. We find that the same relation is applicable to neural field systems, enabling us to unify the behaviors of a few neural feedback processes and propose mechanisms for real-time tracking.
